My Story

Last year I walked 30 miles on the South Downs Way and raised £400 for the Bumblebee Conservation Trust - this year I'll be walking or running the virtual marathon and rounding it off to 30 again for our wonderful bats! I'm specifically raising funds for the National Bat Helpline.
Why bats? We have 18 species of bat in the UK, which make up nearly a quarter of all our mammals. They are excellent house guests, charismatic creatures, an essential part of a healthy functioning ecosystem, biodiversity indicators, and in being insectivorous, help keep the mozzies at bay. Bats are like tiny flying humans, closely related to us, and the only true flying mammals in the world!
The Bat Conservation Trust Helpline receives thousands of enquiries each year, and together with volunteers, we help people and bats to thrive together. In a nutshell, we help people who find bats in need of care, people who need advice before maintaining their homes where bats are roosting, we advise people on what to expect when discovering a bat roost, and help to allay fears and concerns.
After suffering huge declines, some species of bat are doing well now that they are protected by law, but we need more resources put into supporting people to understand and abide by the law, as well as better protection for bat foraging habitats and awareness raising of roost protection. With so much habitat degraded and fragmented, bats need our help as they are more frequently found roosting in man made structures. Being nocturnal, they often seem elusive, but I can guaruntee if you have the chance to watch them in the late evening light and manage to detect their calls with a little help from a bat detector, it'll do wonders for your mental health!
The Helpline is a small team that could help even more people and bats with more funding. If you can chip in to help these marvellous British mammals, please spur me along the way and sponser my long journey.
